What to Include in the Skills Section of Your Resume

Updated 28 September 2026 1 min read By LaunchCV.in

Keep the skills section honest, grouped and relevant to the role.

List skills that match the job description and that you can talk about confidently.

Group them

  • Languages: for example Python, JavaScript, SQL
  • Frameworks and tools: for example React, Git, MySQL
  • Soft skills: only if backed by an example elsewhere on your resume

Avoid rating yourself with stars or percentages; they are subjective and rarely helpful.

Example layout

Languages: Python, SQL, JavaScript
Tools: Git, Excel, Power BI
Frameworks: Django
Other: Data cleaning, report writing

How to choose

Open the job description, mark every skill you honestly have and put those first. If you cannot discuss a skill for two minutes, remove it.

Common questions

Should I list soft skills?

Only if you can support them with an example elsewhere in the resume.

Should I show skill ratings?

Avoid stars and percentages. They are subjective and rarely help.
