How to write a short summary that says who you are and what you offer.

A summary is two or three lines at the top of your resume. It should state your role or goal, your strongest skills and one proof point.

Fresher example

BCA graduate with hands-on experience in PHP, MySQL and JavaScript through two deployed projects. Seeking a junior web developer role to build reliable, user-friendly applications.

Experienced example

Data analyst with three years of experience turning sales data into dashboards that support weekly decisions. Skilled in SQL, Excel and Power BI.

Write your own version, and avoid vague phrases like hard-working team player.

A formula you can reuse

[Role or goal] with [main skills or experience] and [one proof point]. Looking for [type of role] to [what you will contribute].

Weak versus strong

Weak: Hardworking and dedicated team player looking for a good opportunity.

Strong: Final-year BCom student with strong Excel and Tally skills and a live inventory tracker built for a family shop. Seeking an accounts trainee role to support accurate reporting.

The strong version tells a reader what you can do on day one.

Common questions

How long should a summary be?

Two to three lines, or about forty to sixty words.

Should I write in first person?

Most resumes avoid I and start with a strong noun phrase or role description.
