What is technical support?
Technical support (also called IT support, help desk or service desk) helps people solve problems with computers, software, networks and accounts. Every company with computers needs support staff, which makes it one of the most accessible entry points into IT.
Typical tasks
- Resetting passwords and unlocking accounts
- Installing and updating software
- Fixing computers, printers and network problems
- Setting up new employee laptops and accounts
- Helping users by phone, chat, email or remote screen sharing
- Recording problems and solutions in a ticketing system
Support levels
| Level | Handles | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 (L1) | First contact, common issues | Password reset, Wi-Fi not connecting |
| Level 2 (L2) | Deeper technical problems | Software errors, account and device configuration |
| Level 3 (L3) | Complex issues, often with engineers | Server problems, bugs, system design |
