10 Common Resume Mistakes and How to Fix Them

  5. Vague bullets: add what you did and the result.
  6. Inconsistent formatting: use one font and consistent dates.
  7. Irrelevant details: remove unrelated hobbies and old achievements.
  8. Photo and personal details: not needed for most jobs; follow local norms.
  9. Same resume for every job: tailor the top third for each role.
  10. Bad file name: save as Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf.

A five-minute self-review

Print your resume and hold it at arm’s length. Can you see the section headings, your name and your strongest project in about six seconds? If not, simplify the layout. Then read every bullet and ask what a reader learns from it. If the answer is nothing, rewrite or delete it.
