How to Find Your First Job as a Fresher

Updated 28 September 2026 2 min read By LaunchCV.in

A step-by-step plan for the first job search when you have little or no experience.

Employers who hire freshers are betting on potential, so your job is to make that potential visible and easy to verify. A first job search is a small project with a clear method, not a lottery.

Step 1: Choose a target

Pick one or two roles, for example junior web developer or data analyst trainee. A focused resume and search beat a vague one. Read ten job descriptions and note the skills that repeat.

Step 2: Close the biggest skill gap

Compare the repeated skills with your own. Choose the top two gaps and spend four weeks on them through projects rather than only courses.

Step 3: Build proof

  • Two or three projects deployed and linked
  • A resume of one page that leads with projects and skills
  • A LinkedIn profile that matches the resume

Step 4: Apply in a system

  1. Apply to five to ten roles each day through company career pages and job portals.
  2. Send a short personalised email or message for roles you really want.
  3. Ask alumni, seniors and teachers for introductions.
  4. Track each application in a spreadsheet: company, role, date, status and next action.
  5. Follow up politely after about a week.

Step 5: Prepare for interviews as you go

Practise common questions aloud, explain each project in two minutes and review basics for your role. Use our interview section for question guidance.

Scams to avoid

  • Any employer who asks you to pay a fee for a job or training before hiring you
  • Offers that arrive without an interview
  • Messages asking for bank details or identity documents early in the process

Handling rejection

Rejection is normal in a first search. After every rejected interview, write what you would do differently, then fix one thing before the next.

What to do today

Write your target role, list its top five skills and rate yourself on each. Then book two hours to start closing the biggest gap.
