Full Stack Developer Roadmap

Updated 28 September 2026 3 min read By LaunchCV.in

Combine frontend and backend skills so you can build and ship a complete product.

A full stack developer works on both the interface and the server. Employers value you for being able to take a feature from database to screen, but depth still matters: be strong in one side and competent in the other.

What the work looks like

In one day you might adjust a database table, expose it through an API, and build the form that uses it. The value of a full stack developer is turning a small feature into a complete, working slice without waiting on three people.

Your learning plan

Timelines assume steady part-time study. Move on when you can do the checkpoints, not when the calendar says so.

Phase 1: Web fundamentals (Weeks 1-5)

HTML, CSS and JavaScript to a level where you can build without tutorials.

You are ready to move on when you can:

  • Build three static pages from scratch
  • Add interactivity and form validation with plain JavaScript

Phase 2: Backend and data (Weeks 6-10)

Pick one server stack and one SQL database.

You are ready to move on when you can:

  • Create an API with login and role-based access
  • Model users, items and orders in a relational schema

Phase 3: Connect the two (Weeks 11-15)

Build the frontend that consumes your API.

You are ready to move on when you can:

  • Use React or plain JavaScript to display and edit server data
  • Handle loading, errors and expired sessions cleanly

Phase 4: Complete products (Weeks 16-22)

Ship two apps that a stranger can use.

You are ready to move on when you can:

  • Deploy both with a domain, HTTPS and a database
  • Write a README describing features, stack and what you would improve

Skills checklist

  1. HTML, CSS and JavaScript fundamentals
  2. A frontend framework such as React
  3. One backend stack, for example Node.js with Express or PHP with MySQL
  4. SQL and one NoSQL database
  5. Authentication and authorization
  6. REST APIs and how the frontend consumes them
  7. Git, deployment and environment configuration
  8. Build two complete apps end to end

Projects to build

  • Job board with login
  • Task manager with roles
  • Small e-commerce store
  • Real-time chat app

How to present your work

Two finished, deployed apps beat ten half-built ones. For each, show a demo login, a short video or screenshots, and a paragraph on how the frontend and backend talk to each other. That paragraph is what proves you are full stack.

What employers expect at entry level

A junior full stack developer delivers small features across the stack with guidance. Expect to be stronger on one side and still learning the other.

Free places to learn

The Odin Project, freeCodeCamp, MDN Web Docs and the official React documentation. Course availability changes, so check each site for current content.

Common questions

Is full stack better than specialising?

Neither is better. Full stack suits startups and small teams, while specialists are common in larger companies. Many people begin full stack and specialise later.

Which stack should I choose?

Pick a popular, well-documented stack and finish projects with it. A common choice is React with Node.js, or PHP with MySQL for many agencies and freelance clients in India.

Can I freelance with these skills?

Yes, once you can deliver a complete site or app reliably. Start with small local businesses and record what you learn from each project.

Quick reference

Who is this career for?

Learners who want flexibility, freelancers, and people aiming for startups where one developer covers many areas.

Prerequisites

Comfort with basic programming; patience, because the surface area is large.

Skills Required

Frontend framework, backend framework, databases, APIs, authentication, Git, deployment.

Tools

VS Code, Git and GitHub, Postman, a database client, Vercel or a VPS.

Resume Strategy

Show 2-3 complete apps with live links and clearly state which parts you built.

Interview Preparation

Expect questions from both sides plus a system design discussion on a small app. Explain your architecture choices.

Job Search Strategy

Target startups and product companies, freelance small projects to build proof, and keep every project deployed.

Common Mistakes

Trying to learn every framework at once; shallow projects with copied code; no authentication or error handling.
