Why interviewers ask this
It is an opening question that shows how clearly you communicate and what you consider important.
How to approach it
Use a short present-past-future structure: what you do or study now, one or two relevant achievements, and why this role fits next.
Example answer
I am a final-year BCA student who has built two web projects in PHP and JavaScript. Last semester I created a student attendance system used by my class. I am looking for a junior developer role where I can keep learning while contributing to real projects.
What a weak answer sounds like
I am hardworking, honest and a quick learner. I am looking for a good opportunity.
It is vague, has no example and gives the interviewer nothing to remember.
Common mistake
Reciting your entire life story or repeating your resume line by line.
Follow-up questions to expect
- Which project are you most proud of and why?
- What made you choose this field?
- What do you want to learn in your first year?
How to practise
Write a 60-second version and a 30-second version, then say them aloud until they sound natural rather than memorised.
Use this as a pattern, not a script. Answer in your own words with your own examples.
