How to Change Careers into Tech

Updated 28 September 2026 2 min read By LaunchCV.in

A realistic plan for moving into tech from another field.

Career changers have a real advantage: they understand a business domain and know how work happens. The transition works best when it is planned in stages and supported with proof, not just intention.

Step 1: Choose a realistic target

Pick a role that uses your existing strengths. Examples: a finance professional moving to data analysis, a teacher moving to instructional design or training content, an operations professional moving to business analysis, a designer moving into UX.

Step 2: Learn the core skills

Plan three to six months of consistent study, around ten hours a week, focusing on the skills that appear repeatedly in job descriptions. Use a mix of structured learning and building.

Step 3: Build proof that uses your background

Create two projects that combine new skills with your previous field. A former retail manager, for instance, could analyse sales data to recommend stock changes. This tells a story only you can tell.

Step 4: Rewrite your resume

  • Lead with a summary that names your new target
  • Put projects and relevant training near the top
  • Reframe old roles around transferable skills such as analysis, communication and ownership

Step 5: Get a foot in the door

  • Look for internal moves at your current employer
  • Consider bridge roles such as support, QA or reporting
  • Try freelance or volunteer projects to gain references
  • Talk to people who made the same move and ask what worked

Managing risk

Keep your income stable while you learn. Set a timeline and review it every month. Decide in advance how many hours you can invest per week and what result would make you adjust the plan.

Common mistakes

  • Collecting certificates without projects
  • Trying to learn five things at once
  • Hiding your previous experience instead of using it
  • Expecting results in three weeks

Next steps

Write the role you want, list the five skills you need to add and choose one project idea from our project library that matches your background.
