DevOps Engineer Roadmap

Updated 28 September 2026 3 min read By LaunchCV.in

Automate building, testing, deploying and monitoring software.

DevOps engineers help teams ship software reliably. You bridge development and operations with pipelines, containers, infrastructure automation and monitoring.

What the work looks like

You improve the pipeline that builds and ships code, help a team debug a failed deployment, tune an alert that is too noisy, and write down what you learned so the same incident does not repeat.

Your learning plan

Timelines assume steady part-time study. Move on when you can do the checkpoints, not when the calendar says so.

Phase 1: Linux and scripting (Weeks 1-4)

The daily toolset.

You are ready to move on when you can:

  • Automate a repetitive task with a shell script
  • Read and interpret system logs

Phase 2: Version control and CI (Weeks 5-8)

Automate testing and builds.

You are ready to move on when you can:

  • Create a pipeline that runs tests on every push
  • Explain branching strategies and code review

Phase 3: Containers and deployment (Weeks 9-13)

Package and run software consistently.

You are ready to move on when you can:

  • Containerise an app and run it with Docker Compose
  • Deploy to a cloud VM or a managed container service

Phase 4: Observability and reliability (Weeks 14-18)

Know when things break before users do.

You are ready to move on when you can:

  • Set up metrics and a dashboard for a running service
  • Write a short post-incident review for a failure you cause on purpose

Skills checklist

  1. Linux and shell scripting
  2. Git workflows
  3. CI/CD with GitHub Actions or Jenkins
  4. Docker and container registries
  5. Kubernetes basics
  6. Infrastructure as code
  7. Monitoring and alerting with tools such as Prometheus and Grafana
  8. Incident handling and documentation habits

Projects to build

  • CI pipeline that tests and deploys a sample app
  • Dockerized multi-service app
  • Monitoring dashboard with alerts

How to present your work

Show pipelines and dashboards. A repository with a working CI workflow, a container setup and a documented deployment tells more than a list of tool names.

What employers expect at entry level

A junior DevOps engineer maintains pipelines, follows runbooks and improves small things safely. Designing platforms is a later step.

Common questions

Can freshers start in DevOps?

It is possible but competitive. Many people begin as developers, sysadmins or support engineers and move across. Strong projects help freshers.

Do I need Kubernetes?

Learn Docker first. Kubernetes basics are useful once you understand containers, but many roles start with simpler setups.

Which CI tool first?

GitHub Actions is easy to start with. The ideas transfer to Jenkins, GitLab CI and others.

Quick reference

Who is this career for?

Developers or sysadmins who enjoy automation and improving how teams work.

Prerequisites

Comfort with Linux and at least one programming or scripting language.

Skills Required

Linux, scripting, Git, CI/CD, Docker, cloud basics, monitoring.

Tools

GitHub Actions, Docker, Terraform, Prometheus, Grafana, a cloud free tier.

Resume Strategy

Show pipelines you built, what they automate and measurable improvements such as deployment time.

Interview Preparation

Expect Linux troubleshooting, pipeline design, container questions and how you would respond to an outage.

Job Search Strategy

Start from a developer, support or sysadmin role if needed, and build public pipeline examples.

Common Mistakes

Learning tools without understanding what problem they solve; skipping fundamentals; no documentation.
